Fictional Furniture: MATERIAL LUST x kinder MODERN Craft CRAWL Chair
/If the world hasn’t already taken notice, it will soon realize that we are living amongst two design greats that will go down in the annals of history. The ultimate power couple, Lauren Larson and Christian Lopez Swafford make up the design team behind New York based design house, Material Lust. The dynamic duo has teamed up with kinder MODERN to create Fictional Furniture, a collection that explores children’s fascination with development and design and creates “subconscious” heirlooms by injecting high design into youngster’s moldable minds.
While all of their pieces certainly make a statement, one piece that stands out in particular is the Crawl Chair. Carved from walnut, the playful seat showcases hands for feet and feet for hands to allow children to interact - climb, crawl, and sit backwards.
"Creating a kid’s line may come off as odd to an outsider when looking at our 'adult' work, but it really felt natural to us,” explained Larson. “Your childhood is really where it all begins. We wanted to create a genderless and colorless collection that would add to their imagination rather than tell them how to play.” With influences rooted in the surreal, and a gender-neutral monochromatic palette, each piece transcends the playroom and the home to make a bold statement about the sweet fierceness of childhood throughout the ages.
