Illumination Innovation: Rough Diamond Chandelier by Ben-Tovim Design
/“Rough Diamond Chandelier is a marriage of computer technology and hand-craftsmanship.” explains Jonathan Ben-Tovim, founder and creative director at Melbourne-based Ben-Tovim Design. Using 3-D printing, and connecting each piece by hand, Ben-Tovim’s latest light fixture combines minimalistic design, gravity-defying aesthetics, and the infusion of technology in craftsmanship.
The Chandelier comprises of 66 custom 3D printed joints and 75 feet of hand cut, polished metal tube. Six floating bulbs, suspended inside six pendants, the light not in the least bit inhibited by the design. Each skeletal chandelier, the largest and most expansive in the Rough Diamond series of light fixtures, is handmade in studio, and Ben Tovim design prides itself in their handiwork and expertise in crafting and composing these geometrically, symmetrically, and aesthetically pleasing structures. So much so, that the studio asserts that since each is handmade, custom structures (materials and all!) can be built upon request — Copper, brass or matte black. You decide.
Careful craftsmanship is key for these pieces; ornate, hand-made structures are paramount to the studio, and each of these chandeliers shines as a testament to their mission. Old-world craftsmanship plus new-age design and technology equals works like these; simple, yet interesting; functional, and fascinating.
