Inside The Home of Swedish Designer Marie Olsson Nylander

Swedish Interior Designer Marie Olsson Nylander is giving the world an intimate peek inside her family home. The shabby 1970?s villa humbly sits in the town of Arild, Sweden, where it hasn’t see any love for 30 years, until now. When Nylander and her husband Bill first laid their eyes on the unkempt villa they weren’t convinced it was going to be theirs, yet they couldn’t get the home out of their heads. The Nylander’s returned three times to view the villa which caused them to slowly catch feelings for the old home; a purchase came shortly after.

The home was rundown yet charming with a greasy, old kitchen, cracked blue shutters, and a thatched roof. Nylander immediately went to work tearing out the old parquet flooring, opening up the ceiling, renovating the bathrooms, and knocking out a wall to build a porch.

She then added timeless pieces, each with their own unique story, uniting the design of the villa. A circular, worn iron staircase was introduced connecting the first floor to the second floor. Nylander purchased the staircase from an old, retired pilot who she came across while driving through the farms outside Arild, a dining room table from Egypt, paintings from artist Tove Mauritzon, and a bench which was previously an old gymnastics terminal.

Bill and Marie strongly agree on one fundamental decorating issue; they love cracked and worn out objects that tell a story. Their home is a strong indication that the two live in harmony.
