Rococo Candle Holder
Dissecting the work of Johan Brunix is like excavating a dusty pawnshop filled with long lost trinkets. His concept for Rococo is based on forgotten objects, toys in this case, in which he plays with odd juxtapositions and a mix of eastern and western influences. He captures a whimsical world where Godzilla inspired candlesticks wage war on an army of beetle broaches while a hinged butterfly dances atop a golden apple.
The Design Academy in Eindhoven graduate explains, “I started to experiment with giving new life to discriminated objects. Stuff you find in second hand stores, toys from the attic, stuff that was bought with a dream and lived a life. Often rare objects.” All of his creations are unique, an eclectic mix of molds of old toy parts masquerading in metal finishes or solid bronze. Like Brunix says, ‘It’s not what you are that counts, it’s what they think you are!’
