Toile de Jouy Inspired Sneakers

Opening Ceremony is genius when it comes to collaborations, teaming up with artists, designers and celebrities alike. It’s fascinating to watch numerous points of view all expressed under the same fashion house. Their recent collaboration made us immediately reevaluate our sneaker collection. OP teamed up with Keds and artist Richard Saja to create one-of-a-kind, French, toile-inspired kicks. “Richard has been remixing and revamping quintessentially French toile prints since 2001 when he first designed a set of toile printed pillows with clever, playful twists on monochromatic pastoral scenes.” OP explained. These sneakers are merely scratching the surface of his exploration with toile. “Anyone familiar with ‘Toile de Jouy’ – a print that originated in France in the 1700s – would most likely associate it with the sweet, girly Marie Antoinette-style décor of grandma’s dining room, but Richard’s reinterpretations subvert the expected daintiness by inserting figures reminiscent of the artist’s childhood doodles: superheroes, monsters, clowns and mutants. The end result recalls something else along the lines of fabric graffiti, or comic strip tapestry.”
